So this week it was job to find a statement of a code of ethics for my field. So first things first, I turned to google to help me out. I actually looked up "code of ethics" first, to get a better idea of what this was. I learned that it's a collection of principles and practices that a business believes in and aims to live by. It often works with the company's mission statement and kind of provides an idea of the business's goals and ideals.
One statement that I found in a sample code of ethics for business is "Respect for the individual". This statement directly corresponds to my own code of ethics in that I find it extremely important to respect everyone and everything. Everyone deserves to work (and learn) in an area where he/she feels respected and valued. Everyone's success depend on the respect they are shown. Because of this belief that I have, I am confident in my ability to respect others.
My learning here at MSU is helping me in many ways in this area:
1. I learn to show respect for other peers
2. I learn to show respect for my teachers by putting my cell phone away and showing up to class.
3. I learn to show respect for the environment that I am in.
For instance, in school, we work in groups. In a real-life business job, I will also be working in groups. Working in groups now teaches me to value other's opinions, respect their input, and to take what they have said and build upon it. If you don't show the members of your group respect, the whole project ultimately does not succeed. This prepares me well for the future in business.
Showing respect for teachers is very similar to showing respect for a boss. It is disrespectful to not show up for school, and disrespectful to not show up to work. Communication via email about absences and problems is something that we do now to help in the future with bosses and employers.
Lastly, showing respect for my school prepares me to show respect to my workplace. Throwing away garbage, not writing on property, recycling paper and bottles, etc. is something that I am getting into the habit of now so that in the future it will just be routine.
Whether we know it or not, school teaches us a lot about how to act in the future. Without the preparation we are receiving now, it is hard to know how to act in the workplace. The statement of a code of ethics "Respect the individual" taught me to realize just how prepared I am to be in a workplace where respect is so important.
